Volunteer banned from shelter after photos of badly injured dog cause stir.

http://www.examiner.com/article/volunteer-banned-from-shelter-after-photos-of-badly-injured-dog-cause-stir
Maria Sanchez dedicates much of her time toward helping the dogs who are incarcerated at the San Bernardino, Calif. City Animal Control. Sanchez took it upon herself to go to the facility to take photos of the dogs who were not yet listed on the facility's website.
Recently, however, Sanchez was banned from returning to the shelter to continue her charitable work.
According to Sanchez, she has been banned because of a photo that she took of a dog who was badly injured, but not being treated. The dog, a pit bull, had a blue rope deeply embedded in her neck.
Sanchez alleges that the dog had been suffering, at the facility, for six days with the rope buried in her flesh.
Please contact the shelter and demand that they become more rescue and animal friendly, and humane! City of San Bernardino Animal Control, 333 Chandler Place, San Bernardino, CA (909) 384-1304

    6. This supervisor needs to do his job or leave. Let him treat these animals like he would treat his children.
Disgraceful to see a volunteer who cares be dismissed.
I have a large no kill shelter non profit shelter in
Sanford Fl. without volunteers we would not exist.
If our animals are in distress we see to there needs. Any staff including the supervisor could have cut the rope from the dogs neck , give him antibiotics and onitment on his neck . Judy Pet Rescue by Judy

    7. Why am I not surprised? This is just another case of animal cruelty and neglect..This poor dog already suffered at the hands of its owner and finally gets saved and is still mistreated. What took 6 days to get this poor dog medical attention. This is just another case of incompetance and carelessness.. The supervisor should be let go, not the volunteer who tried to help....

    10. Thats just absolutely crazy. This shit shouldn't be happening in the first place. If people who work at these places would be doing their jobs, then there wouldn't be horror stories like this for us to read about and get all frustrated because in most cases our hands are tied and cannot do shit about it. It makes me mad and extremely sad to see this is goin on and especially in a shelter where these poor dear creatures are suppose to feel and to be safe and protected but...............

    12. I called the shelter and left a message of concern. To my suprise, they returned my call but said that they couldn't reassure me that this pup had received treatment because they were unaware of the situation that I was referring to. Very frustrating! I still felt compelled to mention that you can't legally ban someone from a city or county facility unless they are actually breaking the law. When you're a taxpayer and animal advocate/rescuer, their door should say- Welcome!

  6. Please San Bernardino shelter, don't let anymore time go by without freeing this poor dog of pain, & suffering... not to mention what his flesh will be like when you Finally remove the rope!!!
Imagine you've been waiting 6 days at an emergency room with your child who has something imbedded into his or her skin on their neck, without any of the medical staff freeing your child of pain, & suffering!!!! How would you feel?? Well that's how all of us animal.lovers feel!!!! Then there's this poor pit bull who never asked to be abused, & is hoping, the same way we would, for some humane person to come along, & help him. Gosh this is horrible!!! You're the people, & place we'd all expect to bring an animal who needs help such as this, because you'd help them.... free them from the abuse they've been living thru!! Instead you're letting the dog suffer, which makes you No Better then it's previous owner!!!! I'm. Appalled!!!!!!

  7. Dear Mr. Long:

It would seem that had you praised and thanked the volunteer that took the unappreciated photos of the dog with a rope buried in his neck for days on end, you and your facility could have come out looking a lot better, as in willing to acknowledge that the ball had been dropped and yet you were more than willing to pick that ball up and RUN WITH IT to create IMPROVEMENT and a better over all facility situation.

Now, sadly, it's going viral on the internet and you look like a first class mooch, who collects a pay check while turning a blind eye to things that DO NEED to be improved upon.

People can FORGIVE AND FORGET honest mistakes....but deliberate cruelty...... That sorta sticks to you, like glue.

Follow the money....who will be believed as credible? The one helping for free, or the one scooping up the paycheck? Rocket Science, it isn't!

  14. The inaction of the shelter regarding this dog's injury is reprehensible.

And Maria's help at that shelter is much needed and and appreciated by animal lovers, as well as the animals. Do not make the animals go without her care and help, because your shelter did not do the right thing and care for the dog's wounds!

  15. I just emailed Mr. Long. I hope the city of San Bernadino reconsiders his employment. His callous disregard of the well-being of those in his care is disgusting. To allow an innocent dog to suffer, and then punish the woman trying to help her is beyond reprehensible. It hurts my heart that so much abuse and neglect continues, and so few are willing to make any effort to stop it.

  22. If injury is untreated it is abuse. We have laws against it already. They need to be charged with animal abuse. Exposing a problem, injury then being punished is indicative that it was on purpose, being hidden. Else, as any normal human would do, someone in charge would have said thank you so much for letting us kknow of the I jury and treated the animal and thanked the volunteer. Volunteer gives of their persona time is not paid. They were helping of their own selfless volition. They are to be commended not punished. Whomever made the decusion to not allow the volunteer to return (and anyone else involed with the coverup) should be charged with animal crueltyand punished to highest extent of the law. What else are they hiding?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I have also been banned from a local shelter because of taking photos to help get the animals adopted. Not our fault the shelter have things to hide. Shame on them for banning folks that care about the animals.

    ReplyDelete
  24. The following is what I sent to Mr. Long:

IF the following is true, the action you have elected to take in banning a volunteer from taking any more pictures of animals in your facility, needing to be adopted, then YOU have planted the seed that there are other atrocities you are wanting/needing/trying to hide from the public. If this was truly an isolated incident, step-up and take responsibility for the lack of attention the poor dog was receiving, but don't ban a volunteer from the facility/taking any more pictures...unless the seed you planted is one you want to see grow.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I also e-mailed. I dont know that any of us will make a difference, but one can but hope

    ReplyDelete
  26. As humans it is up to us to protect these defenseless and innocent animals. Shelters are supposed to be a place where these animals will find help and hope. It's sad to find out that this particular shelter has strayed from what is really important. You shouldn't have things to hide. Maria Sanchez was looking out for the animals, and she shouldn't be punished for it. Please do what is right.

    ReplyDelete
  27. In order to really affect change at this shelter, not only should we be contacting the shelter supervisor, but we should also make those above him aware of the situation. The San Bernardino City Manager is Andrea Travis-Miller, Travis-Miller_An@sbcity.org (909) 384-5122. The Mayor is Patrick Morris (909)-384-5133 (I was unable to find an email address for him). I am contacting these individuals as well as the shelter supervisor and hope you all will too (I especially encourage residents of San Bernardino to take action since the Mayor counts on your votes and your voices will more likely be heard)

  28. What is it that happens to some people who work at animal shelters? Do they get hardened to the suffering that the animals are going through or are they just idiots to begin with? Perhaps a rope should be wrapped around their necks for a few weeks, maybe then they would know how it feels. If anyone is afraid to do it, let me know, I will volunteer.

    ReplyDelete
  29. This is what I sent...
    Ryan Long,
On behalf of all the pet owners and animal supporters across the country (AND THE WORLD), I would like to kindly demand you lift the ban on volunteer Maria Sanchez. You need to allow her to continue doing her heartfelt good works of compassion. Furthermore, you must make your shelter (if you can even call it that) humane. We people against inhumane treatment of animals will NOT sit back and let this die down! What is the status of the dog in the photo at http://www.causes.com/causes/800778-justice-for-mary/actions/1722775?causes_ref=email&template=activity_mailer%2Fcustom_activity_mail&utm_campaign=custom_activity_email&utm_medium=email&utm_source=causes ? I surely hope your "shelter" has removed, safely and properly, the rope from its neck and have medicated and bandaged the wound. You will need to continue the treatment and change the bandages, too, so don't fall down on your job. If your shelter is not willing to do any of this for that poor baby, then you need to let rescues in the area know and they WILL! Again, we will not let this lie. Do your job!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Please think of your own self. What about that if you would have been in this painful situation. Also simply aboandoned.!!! Please be kind enough to remove those ropes from his neck & ther will be somany people willingly take this lovely Dog to have him as their pet. Inflicting inhumanely & making this poor animal suffer this way is utterly Barbaric. They feel the pains sufferings, happiness, sadness, lonliness abandonment. They not commodities. People who does not care about animals should NOT be working in such Places. These are the places where the animals need to be getting much needed help with sincerelove and care. So for the people in this Shelter ther is NO EXCUSE FOR abandoning this poor dog to suffer the way he was. while abndoning & neglecting. Well do you all know what is the meaninf of the word "ANIMAL SHELTER" ???

  31. Unfortunately i read something just this morning which involved CMPD Animal Control in Charlotte NC. Several employees posed several animals after they were euthanized and posted it on none other than FACEBOOK. This REALLY pisses me off. What do we have to do to wake up our " JUDICIAL " system ? They can see but are STILL blind. Oh and one more thing NO ONE has been charged and this happen three years ago. THIS hits home w/me as i live in Charlotte NC. And i WILL damn sure voice my opinion. Then there is the dog ZACK i took care of when i found him abandoned. German Shepherd Rescue were coming to get him when CMPD Aniimal Control took him away and EUTHANIZED POOR ZACK only hours later. I went there and met with the Director of Animal Control and was told that ZACK was an Owner Surrender. No one knows how i feel. Where the hell was the owner who left ZACK for dead when i loved him and gave him the damn basic necessities that they .SHOULD have provided for him all along ? And what gives Animal Control te damn right to outright murder such a beautiful LOYAL and TRUSTING SOUL such as ZACK ? He was not even there for MAYBE four hours. And to put the icing on the cake Animal Control came the night before and i spoke with the Officer who told me he was giving me three days to find poor ZACK a home. I contacted the german shepherd rescue and they were coming the very next morning when the OWNER had ZACK taken away. Animal Control took the very last breath from ZACK and it hurts me like it was yesterday. When did THE SYSTEM EVER protect ZACK ? NEVER. What gives them the damn right to kill him ..FOR NO GOOD REASON KNOWING HE WAS TO BE PLACED IN A LOVING HOME ? Read my blog Zack The Abandoned Dog. And visit my YouTube page and you will see where i found him.

  34. This is outrageous...why do people think this is OKAY to do. These poor animals have to suffer from humans that have no thought of the true caring of an animal and work at shelters and think this is okay!! Everywhere I look, an animal is suffering from hurt, neglect and abuse... I hope our words get some positive action for our furry animal friends... I am here 100% to help anyway I can, if needed.

  35. People need to write your state reps and push push push for stronger laws to protect our animals and then people who will enforce it!!! Our judges wont and dont put people in jail for animal abuse. All they care about is the fines. Thats why animal cruelty is just soaring!!!! Everyone knows that not much will happen to them so they do unspeakable acts upon our poor animals. This MUST STOP!!!! Our judges arent punishing these scum bags...they let them go. so the animal cruelty has quad drippled all over the world. When will this start to stop???? PEOPLE PLEASE WRITE YOUR STATE REPS OVER AND OVER UNTIL THEY ARE TIRED OF YOU WRITTING THEM AND THEY GET A BILL SIGNED!! ONCE WE GET LAWS CHANGED, THEN THEY MUST BE ENFORCED!! FOR NOW YOU HAVE TO WORK WITH WHAT YOU HAVE TO PROTECT THE ANIMALS OF YOUR STATE. BUT KEEP PUSHING FOR STRONGER CHANGE. DOG FIGHTING MUST BE A TOP PRIORITY TO GET TEAMS OUT THERE TO BUST THESE DOG FIGHTING RINGS AND MAKE THAT OUR PROMISE TO OUR POOR HOMELESS ANIMALS THAT WE WILL PUNISH THE SCUM BAGS WHO CAUSE THEM PAIN AND SUFFERING! tHE OLY WAY WE CAN HELP IS BY KEEP PUSHING CONGRESS TO MAKE AND ENFORCE CHANGES TO PROTECT OUR ANIMALS!

LI, NY - Town of Hempstead Raises the "WHITE FLAG" .......NEWS ANNOUNCEMENT! FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THE LAW OFFICE OF STEVEN A. MORELLI, P.C.
MEDIA CONTACT: STEVEN MORELLI ‐ 516‐318‐9880
    smorelli@smorellilaw.com
The Town of Hempstead has raised the “White Flag”
Madden v. Town of Hempstead, et al.
Federal District Court, Eastern District of New York
    Case No. 10‐CV‐5682
After two years of litigation, the plaintiffs, Diane Madden, Lucille DeFina and Frances
Lucivero‐Pelletier, three animal rescuers in the Town of Hempstead have secured a total victory
against the Town of Hempstead, Town Supervisor Kate Murray, and various Town Officials. On
this date a judgment has been entered by the Clerk of the Federal District Court, Eastern
District of New York, in favor of the plaintiffs, against the Town of Hempstead and all the
named defendants. This is a clear victory, not only for the plaintiffs, not only for proponents of
First Amendment Rights, but also for the helpless animals that find themselves in the confines of the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter. These ladies have been vindicated in that the New York State Comptroller has issued a scathing
report indicating that what these members of the community were saying was absolutely true.Rather than deal with these issues in public, by way of a jury trial, the Town defendants have
raised the white flag, serving an Offer of Judgment upon counsel to the plaintiffs. While a trial
of this action would have surely publicized the inappropriate goings on at the Hempstead Animal Shelter, given the public report of the Comptroller, and the total capitulation of the
defendants, the plaintiffs have decided to accept the offer of judgment securing their win, and the ability to focus on the animals. Given this victory, the plaintiffs will use their new found resources to now move forward toward privatization. The fight to protect animals is not over, it has just begun.
The plaintiffs, and their lawyer, will be available to answer questions at the Press Room of the Supreme Court, 101 Supreme Court Drive, Mineola @ 3:00 PM.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Part2: They will discuss the winning of their lawsuit, and their plans for the future.
The action filed by Diane Madden, Lucille Defina and Frances Lucivero‐Pelletier through heir attorney Steven A Morelli, was brought to redress defamatory statements made by the
defendants as well as violations of the plaintiffs First Amendment Constitutional Rights. The Plaintiffs spoke out on the issues of misuse of taxpayer monies, including a public wasteland for political cronyism, on animal abuse they witnessed and upon the total failure to safeguard
public donations provided by the people of the community for the care and well being of the animals. Rather than deal with the concerns of the community, the defendants sought to
silence their critics by claiming that they were subject to a criminal investigation, and thus, were no longer allowed in the shelter. There was no basis for these allegations against the
plaintiffs, and they were designed solely for the purpose of justifying the denial of their First Amendment freedoms.

The lawyer for the plaintiffs indicates that “when a municipality takes to attacking their own citizens with unsubstantiated innuendo, you know that something is wrong”. The findings of New York State Audit confirmed the misuse of public funds and mismanagement of theShelter as stated by the Plaintiffs. “However, many of the problems still exist” says DeFina. “The absolute refusal on the part of Hempstead Officials to allow public oversight leaves us no choice
but to continue our efforts to be the voice for the animals” says Madden. Given the findings of the report, and what they have uncovered in discovery in their own action, they will be taking these issues to the Federal Government and other agencies, seeking further investigation as to
financial improprieties, future controls, and public transparencies. The time for fulltransparency is here, and the Plaintiffs will not rest until that is done.

  42. All shelters and animal control offices should provide basic compassion to the animals it takes in. Isn't the human race suppose to be compassionate and the community officials whose job it is to keep us in check suppose to set an example of basic compassion?
In our community in Evanston, IL we have a shelter C.A.R.E associated with the animal control office. It's there that volunteers use common sense, compassion and relationship building with veterinarians who will step forward and help animals in need.
I know sometimes things fall through the cracks but a shelter worker who steps forward to bring attention and possibly necessary donations to help animals in need should be thanked and spotlighted for their initiative not banned and punished.
