TARGET THE WAR HERO DOG

RIP dear Target~ "mistakenly" KILLED at Pinal Animal Shelter in Arizona on Monday Nov 15th!
A War hero dog named Target that lived through explosions in war-torn Afghanistan could not survive a brief stay at an Arizona animal shelter.

The dog, named “Target,” had been brought over recently from Afghanistan by a soldier who had returned from his tour of duty.
Target was a female shepherd mix, she had been featured in local media and by television host Oprah Winfrey for deeds described as heroic in saving 50 soldiers from a suicide bomber at their Afghan base.

On Friday Nov 12th, county Animal Care and Control received a call about a stray in the San Tan Valley area and picked up Target. The animal had not been microchipped or licensed within the county, but the owner was identified.
Target had not been scheduled to be put down.

Target spent the weekend at the shelter and was euthanized Monday Nov 15th morning, according to the release.

The employee responsible was placed on administrative leave for failing to follow procedures and euthanizing the wrong dog, the county said.
The female employee who has not been identified was SACKED on Friday Nov 19th.

“I am heartsick over this,” Animal Care and Control Director Ruth Stalter was quoted as saying. “I had to personally deliver the news to the dog’s owner, and he and his family are understandably distraught.

“We work hard to get strays reunited with their owners. When it comes to euthanizing an animal, there are some clear-cut procedures to follow. Based on my preliminary investigation, our employee did not follow those procedures.

“An investigation is under way and we will cooperate fully. We will also thoroughly review procedures to ensure that something like this does not happen again,” Stalter said. “This is unacceptable and no family should be deprived of their companion because procedures were not followed.”

Australian PUPPY MILLS and banning pet sales in petshops.

PUPPY MILLS...and the petshops.
AUSTRALIA has one of the highest rates of pet ownership.
Pets play a vital role in our society.
Yet..in NSW Australia alone, over 63,000 animals are killed. Lots more are dumped in our National parks or forests..causing havoc with our Native wildlife.
It is widely believed now that there are strong links between pet shops/ puppy mills and the high number of pet dumpings.
PETS BOUGHT FROM PETSHOPS are often impulse buys...and little thought is put into their overall care.
Many backyard breeders and puppy mills often keep their animals in very cruel and poor conditions. These poor animals are continuously bred which keeps the monetary value of these underground industries alive.
A BILL OF RIGHTS...Animal ( Regulation of sale) is hoping to come into effect where the banning of the sale of cats and dogs in petshops is made.
People are becoming more aware now of the cruelty...and are calling for a Parliamentary inquiry.
If we had a more humane society..this would in turn help to end all the tragic unwanted animal dumpings...the sad and cruel killings of so many unwanted companion animals, and the extremely cruel mass breedings of the puppy mill animals that feed the pet industry.

This blog was copied from Facebook, and very much worth posting. Too many animals die in shelters.
FROM A SHELTER MANAGER..READ THIS IF YOU CARE...Share

A Letter from a Shelter Manager:
I think our society needs a huge "Wake-up" call. As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all...a view from the inside if you will.

First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the "back" of an animal shelter for just one day. Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would change your mind about breeding and selling to people you don't even know.

That puppy you just sold will most likely end up in my shelter when it's not a cute little puppy anymore. So how would you feel if you knew that there's about a 90% chance that dog will never walk out of the shelter it is going to be dumped at? Purebred or not! About 50% of all of the dogs that are "owner surrenders" or "strays", that come into my shelter are purebred dogs.

The most common excuses I hear are; "We are moving and we can't take our dog (or cat)." Really? Where are you moving too that doesn't allow pets? Or they say "The dog got bigger than we thought it would". How big did you think a German Shepherd would get? "We don't have time for her". Really? I work a 10-12 hour day and still have time for my 6 dogs! "She's tearing up our yard". How about making her a part of your family? They always tell me "We just don't want to have to stress about finding a place for her we know she'll get adopted, she's a good dog".

Odds are your pet won't get adopted & how stressful do you think being in a shelter is? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn't full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies. Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with about 25 other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps. It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it. If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I don't, your pet won't get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of its pen with a high-powered hose. If your dog is big, black or any of the "Bully" breeds (pit bull, rottie, mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the front door.

Those dogs just don't get adopted. It doesn't matter how 'sweet' or 'well behaved' they are.

If your dog doesn't get adopted within its 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will be destroyed. If the shelter isn't full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long . Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment. If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles chances are it will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed because shelters just don't have the funds to pay for even a $100 treatment.

Here's a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being "put-down".

First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk happy, wagging their tails. Until they get to "The Room", every one of them freaks out and puts on the brakes when we get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there, it's strange, but it happens with every one of them. Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 vet techs depending on the size and how freaked out they are. Then a euthanasia tech or a vet will start the process. They will find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the "pink stuff". Hopefully your pet doesn't panic from being restrained and jerk. I've seen the needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting blood and been deafened by the yelps and screams. They all don't just "go to sleep", sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves.

When it all ends, your pets corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back with all of the other animals that were killed waiting to be picked up like garbage. What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet food? You'll never know and it probably won't even cross your mind. It was just an animal and you can always buy another one, right?

I hope that those of you that have read this are bawling your eyes out and can't get the pictures out of your head I deal with everyday on the way home from work.

I hate my job, I hate that it exists & I hate that it will always be there unless you people make some changes and realize that the lives you are affecting go much farther than the pets you dump at a shelter.

Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only you can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can but rescues are always full, and there are more animals coming in everyday than there are homes.

My point to all of this DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE!

Hate me if you want to. The truth hurts and reality is what it is. I just hope I maybe changed one persons mind about breeding their dog, taking their loving pet to a shelter, or buying a dog. I hope that someone will walk into my shelter and say "I saw this and it made me want to adopt". THAT WOULD MAKE IT WORTH IT

For those of you that care--- please repost this to at least one other craiglist in another city/state. Let's see if we can get this all around and have an impact.

What you can do to stop animal cruelty...

What You Can Do To Help Stop Animal Cruelty and ways to help...

Have you ever been witness to animal cruelty? ..and didnt know what to do.?

There are important ways that you can speak up about what you've seen.

1/ Get Help! If you see someone hurting an animal. Or ..you know of an animal who that looks sick, is injured or doesnt have enough food, water or shelter, you can do something about it.

2/ Never try to help the animal yourself. Call the police or your local animal shelter. It's very important to tell the police because animal cruelty is against the law.
3/ Write Everything Down! Be prepared to give information on the cruelty act you witnessed. Write down what you saw happen, who was involved, the date of the incident and where it took place.

4/ Be a responsible pet person! Don't let your animals roam around free. Keep cats indoors. Dogs should always be on leash and they need supervision when they're outside.

5/ Show others the right way. Be kind to animals and others will copy. Tell your family, friends, and everyone you know that hurting animals is not the right thing.

6/ Volunteer Your Time to help an animal! You're never too young to volunteer. Contact local animal shelters or the humane society for volunteer programs.

Lists of shelters in your area, can be found in the National Shelter Directory.

7/ Spread the Word around! Share facts and info about the prevention of animal cruelty and responsible pet care with your friends, family, teachers, neighbors and classmates.

8/ Start an Animal Club! With the help of animal loving friends, you can organize an animal lovers' club.

Good luck and keep spreading the awareness around ....xoxxo Jayne.

KIDS and ANIMAL CRUELTY...

TALKING TO YOUR KIDS....about animal cruelty.
Our pets seem to know how we feel....from the smallest mouse to the biggest horse. They give comfort when we're hurt, and make us happy when we're sad. They are a part of our joys, and are by our side when times are bad.
Some people are mean to animals though. So...how do we explain this to children?
Animal Cruelty has a very big impact on society in general.
Animals feel pain and suffer fear like us, but they are often helpless victims because they can't talk.
Some animal abusers choose to do this for this reason! To create a humane society, we must stop cruelty against those who are the most vulnerable... our animal friends.
Animals experience pain and suffer fear. People who commit animal abuse have serious psychological problems. Studies have shown that many people convicted of violent crimes had histories of animal cruelty....Dahmer, Bundy, "Son of Sam", and the "Boston Strangler" were all cruel to animals before they moved on to hurting people. Adults humans arent the only ones though, as many murderous children and teenagers like Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold of Columbine High School  have background histories of animal cruelty.
Studies have shown animals in homes, that have family violence are also often victims of violence. Although most of the abuse toward the animals came from the adults there, many of the abused children often abuse their animals.
Can we do anything about the cruelty issues...? Animal cruelty is a worldwide problem. Violence towards animals crosses all racial and socioeconomic lines. Working together.. to bring awareness, no matter where we live, is very impotrtant, as there is a lot we all can do to stop animal cruelty.

1/ EDUCATION...is one of the most powerful tools we have for preventing cruelty to animals. We have to  plant the seeds of kindness in children early, and to nurture their development as they grow. Children not only need to learn what they shouldn't do, but also what they can and should do. When children see that their pets are happy and loving, it will makes them feel good, too. This in turn helps the child to care for their pets' feelings.
Many adults need education, too....as they too.. arent always aware of their actions. We need to urge schools to start teaching basic humane education...to bring back simple kindness into classrooms. There are many programs, education materials etc available to use. Plenty of good ideas and activities are also able to be found on the Internet. We have to start creating a new younger generation, of kind ,decent animal loving humans.
Caution, and careful thought is needed when discussing cruelty with children. It has been shown that children under four years of age, are best not exposed to cruelty. Children need to begin to learning that their actions make others-including animals-happy and sad. They need to discuss their own experiences, and how they would feel, if they were treated the way they treat their pets or others.. in their daily lives.
2/ Handling their pets.. all young children, need a bit of adult hands on guidance, with learning how to pet and hold their pets. Children often have little control over their fine movements and impulses, so a little help from adults.. to do it correctly, is very beneficial.
Teaching our children to understand basic moral concepts, such as fairness. Children can learn to be kind to animals because  animals "deserve" it.
Dont get into much detail about how animals are hurt.. try to limit discussions of animal cruelty to the simple fact that animals can be hurt...and we must show kindness.
With older children....we can begin to discuss why someone might be mean to an animal.  Keeping in mind that it is wrong to hurt animals...and to stress this. Its important to not let discussions of animal cruelty satisfy the morbid curiosity some children have. Children often form some of their earliest memories and impressions about our world etc..from their families. Adults need to filter lots of what children perceive. Children often ..through the media, witness violence and can be strongly affected by it.
Studies show that children aged over 10yrs.. are strongly affected by violence, so discussions about animal cruelty should still be kept free of details about the actual violence. We as adults are role models ..and should make it clear that we dont condone violence in our own thoughts and behaviors.
Parents, teachers, and trusted adults can should also discuss with the over 10year-olds how they would act if their peers or friends treated animals cruelly. These children may encounter other children abusing animals, so let them know they.. will be supported for standing up to any abuse they see.. its very important...to let them know about trust and who they can rely on to help.
3/ The importance of modeling appropriate behaviors. Children often emulate us, even if they wouldn't admit it. If we treat animals cruelly, our children will probably think that this is right or, at least, normal. The more a child identifies with an adult, the greater an impact that person will have on the child-in both good ways and bad ways.

LETS START NURTURING A NEW GENERATION...of kind, animal loving humans.
Educate your children...that ANIMAL ABUSE IS WRONG!

Thankyou Jayne

Abuse in cyberspace

Since starting this the creation page on Facebook after hearing about one horrific story of animal abuse, I have learned so much about what really goes on in the world of animal abuse and about those who fight against it. The pictures and stories are haunting, the petitions too many to sign. Joy seems to be a world away for those abused. I feel almost guilty that we have two healthy, happy and somewhat overindulged dogs who have me wrapped around their cute paws! I lay next to them and wonder what is in their little heads, what lies behind those eyes.
There are many aspects to animal abuse, but the most disturbing is the use of cyberspace, via sites such as You Tube. Here perputrators get away with despicable acts anonymously, using the shock factor and an inflated sense of bravado to commit crimes against the innocent. These sick- minded people believe they are heros. I know there is a special place in hell for them. They commit murder in public, using defenseless creatures as their victims. These people are not only despicable excuses for humans, they are cowards. Their misguided acts of "courage" to video such acts to fit into their sick little societies are extreme acts of selfishness, devoid of anything sacred, and are pure evil. They will not go unpunished, whether in this world or the next.
I recently posted  a comment on the creation site, and our good members found two ways to let You Tube know it is not acceptable to not monitor and remove these videos.
Report by flagging the video on You Tube. Here is a picture link:

http://www.digitalimpulse.org/Images/flag.jpg

Next, use this form: DO NOT ABUSE THIS FORM. Use only if valid, and use appropriately!
http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/request.py?contact_type=otherlegal

And there is a petition to stop this on You Tube:

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/4/get-rid-of-animal-abuse-on-youtube

As Betsy said, report report report. Let the appropriate authorities know as soon as possible when abuse videos show up. Animal abuse is against the law and perputrators need to be prosecuted.
Be diplomatic and respectful in reporting. We want sites like You Tube to work with us, not against us!
Thank you team!! Please go to the comment made on this blog. Once again, You Tube is NOT the culprit. We want them to work WITH us, not against us. This cannot be emphazised enough!

BARKING MAD !!!

Barking dogs...makes for nasty neighbours.
In NSW Australia, complaints against neighbours with pets are rising, with many a number of residents looking at mediation to help cope with the disputes.
Latest figures from the Community Justice Department show mediators have dealt with over 350 animal nuisance cases in 2009.
These mediation cases are costing the Department about $400 each case. Totalling around $152,000 for the 2009 financial year.
In the barking cases...many residents were unaware that their dog was barking whilst they were at work....prior to getting a letter for a mediation session.
Successful mediation sessions have resulted in many owners now being more aware of their need to take their dogs for more walks, and a spike in obedience classes has been noted..where the barking problems can be addressed.
Barking issues also make people a little nasty, with a desperate shift worker being unable to sleep ..trying to poison his neighbours dog.
Most people are fairly tolerant, but when it becomes unbearable.. the mediation sessions then kick in.
I guess we've all got to live together, our beloved pets included...as best we can....dont we?
Do you have a barking dog problem where you live?...and how do you cope?
Me personally...i have a bat problem...the fruit bats, in the trees.. are very noisy for us at night.

ANIMAL HOARDING...What is an animal hoarder?

So....What is an animal hoarder?
1/ Animal hoarders are people who amass more animals than they can properly care for.
These people often fail to recognise, or refuse to acknowledge..when their animals are being neglected, or that their own coping skills are becoming a problem...and everything is out of control.
2/ Animal hoarders often need to have lots of animals. Often, their homes are full of clutter too.
They are often stubborn, refusing to seek help for sick or stressed animals, being in denial that anything is wrong with the way that their animals live in cramped cages or are without food. Animals die frequently as the hoarders dont usually see that their animal is in decline. Some hoarders like to keep their dead animals in freezers, as they cant part with them.
3/Tackling hoarding....Animal hoarding is a very serious issue, and the solution to it need to be community based. Mental health professionals, animal welfare groups, and Vets ..all need to work together to address the psychological element involved.
Medical professionals are now believing that this psychiatric illness is closely related to OCD...( obessesive compulsive disorder).
4/ Both animal hoarders ,and the animals involved suffer greatly. The mental health issue here suggests that hoarders often neglect their own health, and tend to be in denial about how they are coping.
The animals involved often dont get the right diet, sanitary, or Vet care, or the normal everyday care needs that other pets get.
How you can help...show some compassion to the hoarders , as most of them are in desperate need of psychological help.
The animals of hoarders also need our help..lots of love and patience needs to be shown to them as most of these poor animals are in shock, theyve lived in cramped conditions...and now have a fear of open spaces, had no real love / or human contact shown them, irregular feeding , and flea and worm infestations.
LUCKY...that dogs are more forgiving than we humans.

Feelings and Animals

Since founding the site to create a day for the animals on the planet, I have had the immense privilege of being connected with people all over the world who have the welfare of animals at heart, from the fans to active groups, to friends who join because they care! Wow!
As I peer into the minds of the people, the most striking and common threads are how difficult it is witness animal abuse, the anger it stirs, the compassion it generates, and most interestingly of all, how it differs from the compassion we feel for humans.
Why is that? Why do we look away when we see a hurt animal, yet slow down at the scene of an accident in morbid hope of catching a glimpse of a hurt human being? Why are we glued to images of human carnage but cannot tolerate images of abused animals? What cord does it strike?
I believe it is directly linked to feelings we hide from our fellow humans that become blatantly obvious when confronted with  them in a different species, a species who have no voice in the human world, and no defense against the carnage humans create. Humans have two distinct sides, their thinking brain and their feeling brain. Most of us are disconnected to some degree from our feeling side because of conditioning and upbringing, and the expression of our feelings is often taboo in our society. We are made to feel unsafe, yet cannot directly communicate that, only because we are so out of touch. Animals on the other hand, our 100% honest with their feelings. If you don't believe me, threaten any animal, and he will instantly show his anger, show compassion and understanding, and they come to you. Animals smell fear. So do we, we just don't recognise it, as we have been taught to hide our feelings.
Abuse of animals is directly connected to an acting out on the defenseless, as they respond honestly. So in some sick way, those who abuse are hitting back at sick humans who create sickness in their offspring, by denying feelings and the safe expression of them. Humans are taught to lie to survive. Animals don't lie, so humans try to punish them for their own lies. Since we cannot fight back except through a legal system, and the sickness is perpetuated everywhere in our society and our jails, we find ways to heal and feel through the animals to which we have become guardians on the planet. Jails who have inmates taking care of animals show a higher rehabilitation successes. Push this!
Who of us have not learned through our furry friends? I know I have. I know I have become a gentler, more connected person because of these wonderful creatures called animals. I know with certainty that there is something far greater than us to have created all of this. It is humans who create carnage, humans who are devoid of and disconnected from their spirituality, humans who fight unfairly. Animals are open and honest, even in their quest for dominance over one another. They are far more connected and accepting, and I truly believe part of our path to salvation is directly linked to and through them, exactly why we cannot look. . .it is looking at a part of ourselves that desperatley needs healing to which they are infinitely more connected.
Here is a interesting meaning of the word "religion". it comes from the latin , "religare", meaning to 'reconnect' or to heal. What are we reconnecting? The answer is simple. . .to reconnect out thoughts and words with our feelings. E-motion, energy in motion. We are all energy in motion, and we can learn a lot about reconnecting to our spiritual sides through animals, created by whatever we chose to call our Higher Being.
Why do we not already have an Intenational Day of Awareness? Because it would mean we have to look. . .

ANIMAL ABUSE....and Children.

ANIMAL ABUSE and Children.
Animal welfare issues must include child welfare issues as well...as an abused child will often take its anger out on an animal, who often are the nearest, easiest target.

Question...Why do children perform acts of cruelty?...and is counselling..punishment enough?

Children with a family history of abuse, and violence ..often abuse animals in turn.
To some people ...animal abuse isnt a major problem..or issue.
We as animal lovers..do not agree with that...as the violence has gotten out of hand..and we've had enough.
Therefore ..we must start addressing these problems by targetting our young, and hopefully we can mould a new generation of nurturing loving people.

Question...Why do children commit cruelty...what is their motivation?
Is is for control? Is it for retaliation...to shock others, sadism???

TV and media play a big part in corrupting our young.
On average, through their childhood...kids will see thousands of images of murders, acts of cruelty.
Children learn social skills through their parents or others.
Abused kids are often denied normal moral growth. Children exposed to cruelty are at great risk.
Children learn animal abuse through ..incest, sexual abuse..with their offenders often using the harm or death of an animal ..to keep the child quiet.
Research is still being done to determine the age onset of childrens cruelty, gender, family patterns...so that
intervention education can be started to prevent the onstart.
Cruelty to animals is often still a misdemeanor in the US..
That is why we need to keep voicing up worldwide for increased penalties and punishment for those who hurt innocent animals. We as parents, need to install a sense of self worth and a love for all creatures at an early age.
Do you agree or...have any ideas to share??

THE FERAL INVASION...

The feral invasion.....In just over 150 years Australia has permanently changed its eco system.
One of the main causes in Mammal extinction is the introduction of feral pests....animals not native to our island home. These animals were brought here either for biological control, or recreational activities.
Foxes, camels , goats , horses and domestic dogs are but a few roaming free.
The most dangerous ferals in Australia ..are rabbits, cats , carp and toads.
Rabbits are in plague proportion..with the viruses (myxo and calici) that they released to kill them, no longer having much of an effect.
Feral cats are killing machines . Carp are an Asian pest which escaped from a flooded dam in 1961..and are now a major threat to our endangered Cod. Cane toads are dangerous ..relentlessly marching across Australia.
Can we avoid losing more native animals...whilst living with our unwanted foreign ferals?
OR..should we employ professional hunters  to cull them?

NO HOT DOGS please...

Living in Australia...we obviously are living under the harsh sun. And right now down under we're in the latter stage of summer.
I saw something amusing the other day. And it was also warming to see.
Just wanted to share with you all..and see.. if any of you ,do the same thing for your beloved pets.
TO SLIP,SLOP, SLAP...we do it, should we do it to our pets?
For those non Aussies out there..
Slip means...to put on a shirt. Slop: out on some sunscreen. And...Slap: put on a hat.
Do dogs get sunburnt? Well...yes they do.
Is it safe to put our sunscreens on our pets?
Their little noses, especially the fairer nosed dogs, can quite burnt, blister and peel...much like our own noses after a session in the sun.
Also..many dogs who have had their coats clipped over summer, do they need protection?
Can dogs and cats get skin cancer from the sun...well yes they can.
ANYWAY...this is what i saw down at my local beach for dogs the other day.
An elderly lady with her 2 dogs...little dogs ..not sure of their actual breed...?? Corgi crosses.
One dog had sunscreen on...WELL DONE...it was a bright fluorescent green, matching her collar.
The other pooch had a little sunshirt on , with sunglasses...it was funny watching this little dog, try to get them off. I sat and praised this wonderful lady for her love towards her pets..she just smiled and said..she "loved them".
A great day down at the Doggy beach In Newcastle NSW Australia.
Should we help our animals out.. when in the harsh sun?
Yes ..we should.
The message to slip, slop, slap should be for our wonderful animal friends too...Love to all..xoxo JayMerle.

Who's fed up with all the animal cruelty worldwide?

Hi...i am fed up with all the animal cruelty that is happening worldwide. Every day we hear more stories of animal abuse and killings. What is going on out there? Why have humans become so cruel?
More attention and awareness of what is going on out there to our animals ..needs to be publicised.
On Facebook..we have started a group.
Please take a look at it, become a fan, and share it around.
JAN 27 th worldwide will be International Cruelty to Animals Awareness Day.
We want it to be a great day for animals worldwide.
