THIS IS DISGUSTING!...these Chinese peopl need to be reprimanded for this utter cruelty towards these Zoo animals!
The Huffington Post said that according to reports one visitor threw the first snow ball then others joined in.
This isn't the first time animal cruelty was reported at the Hangzhou Zoo.
One Reddit user Triviumsogerd said according to the Huffington Post. "The sad thing is, this is way better than what they normally throw. When I went LAST YEAR people were throwing anything they could get their hands on at the animals. Such as full plastic water bottles, coke cans, also full, rocks, and the worst part is NO ZOO STAFF WAS PRESENT."

How can people be that inhumane to them like that can I hit them and get by with it? No I couldn't and so mad at these not so smart people that hurts gods animals, they make me sick...
ReplyDeleteI abhor any kind of violence ... This is so sick these beautiful creatures should not be there .... They should be running free
DeleteWhy do people who dislike animals always seem to have them? If you can't take care of an animal humanely, then do not have one..This goes for this Chinese zoo or people in general..To allow this behavior is unacceptable..do something about it add security or cameras so this stops...and maybe until then the person throwing the items fall in...
DeleteThey are already outside their natural environment and caged! Yet people still never cease to amaze me on how ignorant and cruel they can be! Perhaps it would be funny to have the roles reversed???
Deletewhere was the staff ,lets get them lions out of there and all the other animals and close that zoo down
DeleteSevere penalties must be applied but first the zoo must employ rangers who actively police and prevent this sort of behaviour from happening. Surveillance cameras are also needed. The Chinese culture is reknowned for its appalling/abominable treatment of wildlife. This is nothing new.I am repulsed and outraged. The animals need to be rescued from this particular zoo. Undoubtedly, it is also happening to other animals in other enclosures.
DeleteSevere penalties must be applied. Rangers are required to police and prevent this dangerous and inhumane behaviour. The Chinese culture has an appalling track record of animal abuse and require education and legislation.Survelliance cameras would also be of value in catching the culprits.
DeleteWhat can Americans do to help? This is why American Exeptionalism is so important to the world. Our uniqueness in our overall respect for animals should be something admired by other cultures and so encourage them to emulate what is good and what is right. There has to be a leader of good to show example...the more financially enslaved to China we become--the worse the whole world is.
DeleteThis does not surprise me that Chinese people can abuse a captured animal, they eat dogs and monkeys, the use Tiger & Bears for so called medicinal use.
ReplyDeleteAlso the use of Sharks Fins, they have a lot to answer for.
The Chinese culture towards animals is abhorent in the extreme!! The people who abuse these captive animals should be punished in an equally violent way (Birched)publicly!!
DeleteThe staff who allegedly care for these lions should also be called to account.
The way the Chinese treat animals will only change if there is a movement from the top making these atrocities illegal and punishable by law, with a punishment severe enough to deter people from breaking the law. The world looks at China in disgust for the inhumane treatment of animals there.
Deleteunfortuanately I agree, I know there are caring in all cultures, but something about the chinese modern culture is vile and abhotrrent, expecially toeards animals, so sad so fearful
DeleteIm outraged at this...how cruel for ppl to do that to these beautiful animals...the worst part is that zoo staff did nothing this must be stopped. Theyvare trapped in that zoo they should at least have rights to safety
ReplyDeleteNot that the Chinese are really known for their compassion towards animals, what with the cat and dog meat trade, the insistance that all cosmetic products are tested on animals and so on. China needs to be dragged into the modern world with regard to animal welfare.
ReplyDeleteOh soooo tru!!
DeleteThose Zookeepers are not doing their job. If those lions get enraged, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near them!
ReplyDeleteI just wish these lions could show they feel and these bastards outside the cage would pee in their pants before running away screaming...
ReplyDeleteWhy do people torture animals? You have to teach them to respect animals. Why in the world should animals be in zoos around the world, no, let them return to their natural environment.
ReplyDeletewell said
Deletecowards it is because they can hit bak and they are there in the pitch
ReplyDeleteThe Zoo, definately needs to be held accountable for this sad display of human stupidty. Also the dumb asses who were lame enough to throw snowballs should be fined. Why???
ReplyDeleteThe Zoo, definately needs to be held accountable for this sad display of human stupidty. Also the dumb asses who were lame enough to throw snowballs should be fined. Why???
ReplyDeletethis is awful-cruel people need to be kept away from all animals (& humans!)
ReplyDeleteIt's a disgrace that humans can act like this. One of the purposes of a zoo is to protect the animals and educate the public of the fate of they're survival. And the very people in charge of their care do nothing!
ReplyDeleteI totally disagree with this.. people disgust me. Lets put them in there where the lions are and let me throw everything I could find at them. Its funny though how they don't complain about the money they are making off the show. Hungry money bastards. I pray that their dignity will come to the price of being paid by God and hope the world knows what disgusting people they are to Abuse such innocent animals. I'd be embarrassed to say I live in a country like that. No fair game. Put all those people out on the field with the lions and no weapons .. see what happens then. People that can hurt innocent animals like that don't deserve the gift of life gods given them. I will continue praying for all the animals in this world and pray justice is served to those who proceed with the cruelty.
ReplyDeleteR-E-S-P-E-C-T. For ALL life. We are failing our future generations, by not living by example and teaching respect. I am so sorry and pray for all who live without knowing their hearts~
ReplyDeleteIn the first place animals belong in the wild not in a Zoo.
ReplyDeleteSecondly, we are a despicable species.
Two lines I completely agree with!!
DeleteCheck out the fur trade on this specific society of people. Not to mention the raping of the oceans, the underground selling of any animal that is endangered, sick, or on their death bed. I'm actually surprised they have Veterinarians in that country! Don't want to be bias or racial but SORRY!!!!
ReplyDeletePeople torture animals often because they feel it gives them power and dominance over the other species, and some incorporate biblical references to that and take them to heart. It would be nice to see the lions returned to their natural environment, but unfortunately there has been so much encroachment upon where they are supposed to live it may be so much tougher than once thought. I want to see those lions climb out of the cages and simply devour a few of those people throwing snowballs at them.
ReplyDelete"A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel." Proverbs 12:10
DeleteThe chinese have an unfortunate record on animal welfare, to say the very least...international pressure comes from withholding your hard-earned $$$ and BOYCOTT all chinese products: clothing, food, and all goods whatsoever. Read your labels!! And DON'T shop at Wal-mart. Ninety-nine percent of their goods, including foods are chinese made, grown and manufactured.
ReplyDeleteAs Jane stated: "Not that the Chinese are really known for their compassion towards animals, what with the cat and dog meat trade, the insistance that all cosmetic products are tested on animals and so on. China needs to be dragged into the modern world with regard to animal welfare" ... I couldn't have said it any better!!
ReplyDeleteThese are the same soulless people who, several years ago, allowed ELEVEN (11!) caged Siberian tigers to starve to death in one of China's worst winters in recorded history! They didn't even have room in the cages to move around to keep warm. These are magnificent animals---endangered---and they belong to the world, not a cruel people who stand by, indifferent to their suffering. Chinese People: For all your supposed enlightenment, you still have not come down from out of the trees....
ReplyDeleteHow can the zookeepers allow this to happen? Those animals are fully in their care and trust them. They are letting the lions down as well as themselves. Lions are from the warmer climates so not only are their bodies adjusting but now they need idiots throwing things at them? Please someone remedy this problem yesterday.

ReplyDeleteI just don't get how we (mankind) can be so cruel...
ReplyDeleteThe chinese should not be allowed near any animal what so ever. I am so angry I'm screaming inside!!!!!!!!

People are disgusting! Why would they do that?!
ReplyDeleteI am just heartsick when I read stories like this!!! China is definitely the worst offender when it comes to animal welfare and there has to be a MAJOR shift in attitude in order for any lasting changes to be made.
ReplyDeletePeople are so very cruel. What is wrong with the world? What causes such terrible behavior in humans? Love these animals don't throw things and hurt them.
ReplyDeletewish i knew?..:(
DeleteCowards...these people should be put to shame.

The truth is in most zoos, the animals are harrassed on a regular basis. This is nothing new. It is built in the view of animals as entertainment. We need a deep cultural change.
ReplyDeletethese awesome creatures do not deserve this shameful act

The Hangzhou Zoo
Once upon a time, I thought a zoo was a place where animals were taken care of the best way....! yes, that was once upon a time!
ReplyDeletePLEASE,CLOSE EACH AND EVERY ZOO IN THE WORLD! Animals need OUR RESPECT and not humiliation!!!!
Raffaella
Italy
I truly believe that you can determine a society's humanity by the way they treat their defenseless, I.e. animals, children, seniors, the disabled. The actions toward these poor animals are horrible and say alot about the mentality.
ReplyDeleteThis zoo needs to be shut down! Patra Reiser Canada
ReplyDeleteI thought they were supposed to be such an intelligent people. this proves otherwise. zoos are supposed to protect the anmals and let us admire them and hope they do not become extinct. These majestic creatures deserve our utmost respect. I think the staff needs retraining for starters. couldn't find the place on their website to protest. :(
ReplyDeleteHow would these people like it if they lived in that zoo and things were thrown at them! These animals are just going about living at the zoo, so if you've got nothing better to do than throw things at them DON'T GO!!!!! This is ignorance at its finest....just unreal that people are that inhumane and petty.
ReplyDeleteThe whole world should place an embargo on all chinese products until such time the chinese people come to their senses, shame on them all.
ReplyDeleteFelony wrong.
ReplyDeleteIt is downright shameful and disgusting. From the things I read and advocate for, China has one of the worst records for animal treatment, such as skinning animals, includingcats and dogs alive for their fur: http://features.peta.org/ChineseFurFarms/. So throwing things at animals does not surprise me. They have no respect for life, pain, suffering, or a right to exist. I bet they would think differently if that lion wasn't protected by a wall...I mean if they weren't protected from that lion, by a wall. Lowlifes!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately par for the course for a nation with an appalling human rights record, blatant disregard for the welfare of animals and, as someone else mentioned, their insistence that beauty products be tested on animals which will do much harm considering that many companies are now trying to capture the Chinese market. It is high time that the Chinese demonstrated that they at least are attempting to become part of the civilised world.
ReplyDeleteWHY DO WE ALLOW CHINA TO HAVE A ZOO.? Obama has NO BALLS, so where is the WORLD HUMANE SOCIETY that removes animals from torturefrom countries that do not deserve to be NEAR. an animal. I'd like to see a leader of a country stand up for something other than his next possible re-election. Let's ask Putin.
ReplyDeleteThis is awful.(i used a clean word) Any zoo is for learning and enjoying God's creatures. I don't care for the Chinese government, but they should step in and punish these idiots, and the zoo people too.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely right!
ReplyDeleteThese beautiful creatures are confined in too small an area and to be abused by those who should be respecting them is cruel! These animals are confined in such a way as they could not escaped their abusers, they should be arrested for abuse and publicly brought up on charges! They do not respect these beautiful creatures and they should be taken somewhere where they would received better care and understanding!
ReplyDeleteThis is the same country where they skin dogs alive for their fur. The Chinese are psychopaths when it comes to animals. Boycott anything from that sick, disgusting country.
ReplyDeleteLiving in the USA, some Chinese here are also inhumane to animals. They have been caught killing ducks and geese in our public parks to take home to eat. One bus headed back to Chinatown in NYC was stopped and 42 geese were found dead in the storage compartments. They have no respect for people or property, so I am not surprised about this, just very saddened. Many zoos should not even be open. This is one of them. I wish people would take better care of our planet and it's creatures. Some are too ignorant.
ReplyDeleteAnimals should not be in zoos, it encourages this childish behaviour from other species, and detracts from any relationship we may have with animals. It is sad to see creatures like a lion in so little space, and throwing things at them it such a vile thing to do, in other words they can only do this because they are in captivity...if those lions were at home, watch those throwers run for their lives, cowardly and puerile behaviour!
ReplyDeleteWe are a very long way from world peace when people are so cruel to animals in public. Security cameras should be taping and catching the people who are not worthy to live in a decent society.
ReplyDeleteThis is horrible. So sad. These beautiful creatures deserve to live a life in an environment where they are safe and comfortable. Not in a zoo.
ReplyDeleteWhat an appalling disgrace. Shame on everyone involved.
ReplyDeleteThe Chinese need to be reprimanded about many things, but first they should establish animal (and human) rights; there's not much we can do without some kind of law, as common sense does not exist in China....
ReplyDeleteNo permitan mas que torturen a los animales, no pueden ser tan malnaciados ni Uds ni el publico, HAGAN ALGO EN FAVOR DE LOS ANIMALES, NO SEAN COBARDES!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThis really ticks me off!!!!!!!!!! What the hell is wrong with these people? Put animals in cages and enclosures and then throw things at them. I emailed the zoo itself and let them know exactly what I thought.
ReplyDeleteI agreed absolutely with you
ReplyDeleteThis is outragoeous, where are the zoo keepers?? I just wish people would leave animals alone. These beauties should be running free, not caged. Humans are so selfish!!
ReplyDeleteThis is breaking my heart. Do these people have any respect? The people that were throwing the snowballs are lucky that these beautiful animals were not able to defend themselves. Nonetheless, something should be done immediately to stop these heartless acts!!! We, as humans have to remain the voice for ALL animals that are abused in any way!
ReplyDeleteNothing about the Chinese surprises me. I imagine they'd stir fry them if given the opportunity.
ReplyDeleteI'm not surprised. We saw appalling treatment of animals in the Beijing Zoo, including people throwing things at the bears, including small stones, water bottles and junk food. The bears ate some of this food, which is not good for them. I despair. China needs to do something radical to stop animal abuse NOW!
ReplyDeleteThese animals need to be treated with respect and kindness. If they can't take care of their animals like they should, then this zoo needs to be shut down and the animals confiscated.
ReplyDeleteThis is totally unacceptable. It's bad enough that the animals are removed from their warm home, forced to reside in cold captivity. It's just awful that people think this is entertainment. That sort of mentality needs to be broken. WE SHARE THIS PLANET WITH THEM.
ReplyDeleteThe beasts are those that threw the snowballs and should be sent into the lion area to retrieve each of the snowballs and let the lions "play" with them.
ReplyDeleteIdiot's! They have pictures of them, they should all be charge! And then forced to clean out all the animal pens ( supervised of course ), I think that Male Lion would love to have a One to One!
ReplyDeleteWhat a shameful display of humanity! The zoo should be fined and the lions moved to a sanctuary.
ReplyDeleteAMEN! They don't have regard for their fellow human being, never mind poor, defenseless, innocent animals. They make me sick!
ReplyDeleteLet's see how many new ways the Chinese can show cruelty to animals. This perfectly displays their lack of understanding that other animals have feelings and emotions. My best wishfor animal abusers is to suffer as they have dished out to the animal. maybe a bit more....
ReplyDeletethis is one of the reasons that make me feel so much compassion towards animals and so little tolerance for humans. We have the power of will and thought and yet we are the bad ones. we harm others out of nothing, with no available reason, and we dare to call the animals beasts. they only kill to eat and survive. humans kill for money for revenge for any other reason. just like that. just like going to the zoo and seeing a lion and thinking "what to do what to do...i know i'll throw with thing in the lion. i'll show him" i really hope those people that did this get hit by a bus or something.
ReplyDeleteI can't leave a comment because I can't read Chinese if you want people to comment you will have to provide instructions on how to navigate through the site
ReplyDeleteThis is why I formed Activists for Animals Africa, as a South African group we completely oppose the sending of our Lions, elephants Rhinos in fact all our big game to any Zoo 's in the Asian Block as the ATROCITIES committed against Animals particularly the Chinese isnot going to be tolerated and we have already held 2 Protedts outside the Chines Embassy calling foreign press to report China 's continuous Abuse of Animals
ReplyDeletei really do not like the chinese people now for this reason, just recently i have been reading about how chinese people skin animals alive for their skins, they skin dogs alive to eat them , but what makes me even sicker to my stomach is that they leave the animals alive to die a slow and agonising death, now that is just pure evil, so this dosnt surprise me one bit , what does surprise me is that this zoo has not been shut down immediatly for the neglect and care of its animals and also staff misconduct. i say close this zoo down like now and get them animals top someone where they can have a pleasant and pain free life . i bet they are covered in bruises from head to toe and are in pain. human beings are the most sadistic and evil race on this planet and they dont deserve to even be here . it makes you ashamed to be one . those poor animals , they deserve better, being as they are caged up for human being pleasure anyway. it is so wrong wrong wrong.
ReplyDeletesick!!!!
