  1. As a dog lover I am all for ending animal cruelty. So I really appreciate all the work done here. But I don't support pet food stamps. I may be old fashioned but I believe if you can't afford to care for a pet you shouldn't get one. That's just my opinion. Again, thank you for all you do.

    1. With so many unwanted animals, I think pet food stamps would help w/ less euthanization for unwanted pets. More people, poor and poorer could have the love of an animal and still be able to give it the sustenance that it needs and deserves. It's a much better idea and would probably cost less than the cost to run the county animal shelters! Just saying.... but I'm not all knowing, either.....

    2. Sometimes your life situation changes and you are in need of some help. How would you feel if you lost your job and had to give up your loved family member of many years? How would you feel if you had to retire and are now living on a fixed income but your dog, who many be senior too, is depending on you and you need that comfort and love? What if your companion is also your service animal? Don't be so harsh and quick to judge, ginaz!

    3. Pet lovers need to help each other during this economic downturn, it's not going to last forever. I don't think the pet food stamps would encourage already poor people to get a dog. I think it would help keep families (including their pets) together during a very rough time when they need their companionship the most. Just thinking about my own dogs going into the shelter system and how mind boggling that would be to them breaks my heart. Imagine having to do that because a stroke of bad luck changed your life. Would you want someone to say you didn't deserve to have your pet? It's easy to stand on the castle balcony and say who deserves this and that, but what if it was you that fell in the "does not deserve" category?

    4. I agree that if you can't afford a pet, don't get one. But what if you already have one (or more) and for some reason your financial situation changes? Do you send your dog or cat to the shelter and hope someone else will adopt him? I think in that instance pet food stamps are a wonderful idea. It lets the owner take care of the pet and lets the pet stay at home with the person who has cared for him all along.

    5. So what if your poor you don't deserve a pet?? I have seen more poor people spend their last dime to try to properly care for their animals than people with money. Because to the poor sometimes that pet is all they have and they are like family to them. Not just a possession. I worked for a very busy Veterinarian for 5 years and the ones who shelled out the most money for their pets were the ones that didn't have it. They were pawning anything they could to care for their pet. And when they didn't have anything to sell and had to put their beloved pet down they were devastated. Which in turn devastated me because i didn't have the funds to help them, which is why i had to quit my job after 5 years. Loved the job just couldn't take the heartache. I also think it will keep more pets out of the shelters. Most of the time animals get taken there because people can't afford to feed them. With the rising costs of pet food and veterinarian care these days soon no one will be able to afford them. So people please think twice before posting comments like these because it isn't true for everyone.

    6. Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I think it is very unfair to say that low-income people don't deserve to have a pet. That is so biased...just because I am poor that does not mean that I will not care for a pet properly...my dogs will eat before I do. And where does it say that rich people do care for their pets Oh, that's right...Michael Vick had a lot of money to feed and care for his 'pets', didn't he?? Oh, and you don't have to worry...these 'food stamps' are 100% donations, not a penny will come out of your pocket!

    7. The comment about poor people not deserving a family pet is a sad example of the brainwashing of the human race in an era of greed, elitism, materialism, consumerism and a lack of compassion toward people and animals. Love and the ability to have love in our lives (which is what pets SHOW AND GIVE us), is the right of every person regardless of their economic status.

  3. If I could afford to help I would.
Everyone I know almost is living paycheck to paycheck.
We are having a hard enough time feeding our two dogs and one guinea pig. Sorry.

    1. Exactly, so why should you have to pay to feed someone else's pet?? Some people make me sick!

    2. I would much rather help pay for someone's pet then some of the people on welfare!!

  4. I'm sorry, I have to agree with ginaz. We need to get away from so many welfare programs which are already overwhelming the taxpayers. I want animals to have loving, caring homes!! Yet, if they can't afford to keep them, then they shouldn't have them. So, they get food stamps? What about veterinary care? Will people be able to provide vet care for their pets if they can't afford food?

    1. this program is a non-profit run on donations...you won't have to pay for anybody else's anything...I hope to heaven that none of you self-rightous people never have any financial problems, because since it is so wrong for people to try to help others that need it, I guess you just couldn't accept help either!

  5. As a pet owner on a fixed income I only have as many as I can afford to feed , which is four dogs and four cats...all but two being rescues. I would be afraid that more ( Which I would surly get if I could get food stamps for them ) would not be fair to those I already have or myself. It would be a great idea as long as , like all great ideas must have; strongly enforced rules to go by.

  6. I had a service animal. She was what kept me going at the worst time of my life. There were times when I made sure that she ate even if I didn't. So please don't say if you can't afford to feed a pet you shouldn't have one. That dog saved my life and my life is worth something even if I am poor and disabled.

  7. If you can't afford food then you surely can't afford a pet. Why should the government feed your pet that you chose to have??? What about the WORKING citizens who have their own pets to feed??? SHAME ON YOU!!!!

    1. Shame on you for your lack of compassion, This is for animals that didn't ask to be brought into this world but deserve to be taken care of right not some lazy POS laying on the couch collecting welfare. Children and animals I will gladly help any day of the week.

    2. read the program info, it has NOTHING to do with the government!!!!

  8. so, kiddo, do you support the $50 billion that taxpayers will have dish out to clean up the gulf of mexico? are you shouting out against corporate welfare ginaz? if not, shut up. corporate welfare costs more than our social programs. also, as to point out, many people have lost their jobs and since the new hiring trend is only to hire part time for crap wages, the taking care of the pet has become much harder. you two live with your heads in the sand.

  9. my only worry is who pays for the food stamps.i think its the greatest idea, but people who can barely make it paycheck to paycheck whic me and my husband are in that category also, who pays for it.will it be made harder for us to live by raising taxes for it?

    ReplyDelete
  10. The taxpayers should NOT have to pay for this program. That is the only reason I do not support it. Food banks sometimes have pet food and honestly, I have been broke and not been able to afford cat food...I just took my chicken scraps and other meat scraps and chopped them up, cooked them slightly and gave em to my cat. It is prob healthier than most of the foods out there anyways.

  11. I am an advocate for all that you do, however, this not something I will ever support. If you need government assistance to live, then you have no business owning a pet. How can you afford proper care of that animal e.g. yearly exams etc..The taxpayers should not have to foot the bill for this too. Sorry.

  12. Did you read the article? This organization is funded by corporate and private donations, not the government. And it's not the only one trying to help down-on-their-luck pet owners and their animal companions stay together by assisting them with food.If you can't donate, that's understandable in these times, but if you can't imagine being separated from your loved one (hopefully your pet is)and you have the means, please consider giving.

  13. The program is not government funded! Get your facts straight! It is a nonprofit organization!

  14. I think anything to help animals is a good idea!
I believe you shouldn't have a pet if you can't afford to look after it but peoples situations do change and if they need some help to get by then so should their pet!

  15. This is not a government supported scheme. It is funded exclusively by private donations. I have donated from France because the alternative is often high kill shelters & I truly believe in this. Some of the comments here are completely missing the point. It will actually save tax payers money..think about it.
The Pet Food Stamps Program is made possible through individual donations and grants. It is not a Government sponsored program.
If you are receiving Food Stamps or are around or below the poverty level you may apply. The program is available to all citizens of the United States.

  16. The money system was put in place many years ago for the purpose of enslaving people. Humans need to wake up! The human species is here to learn a very simple lesson on earth. YOU ARE A CREATOR! You are here to take care of earth and the animals that are here on this beautiful living library we call earth. The mind is soooo powerful!!! I take care of 2 handicapped people, have no job, have 2 rescued dogs, 4 rescued chickens, 2 orphaned kitty's and host of other wildlife. We all have food and shelter! Our needs are supplied because we control our thoughts and call into existence that which we do not have. I have been doing this for 40 years and it truly works. Learn to be a free sovereign creative individual, All your health needs are also met. Reconnect with earth, trust your intuition and guides. If I can do it so can others. I thank all that open their hearts to not only love only themselves but these precious animals that have such beautiful souls. Keep up the great work!!!!

  18. I think this is a wonderful thing so animals won't have to starve because there owners do love them it's just some people can't afford pet food always

    ReplyDelete
  19. Since this is not a taxpayer funded government initiative, I don't object to it but it is worrisome that if pet owners cannot afford food they most certainly can't afford important heartworm meds monthly and yearly vaccines and the rest. I own two dogs and they cost a lot of money to properly care for. But if this program keeps dogs from starving, it can't be bad.

  20. I'm not sure about this. My feeling is that, people who cannot afford to feed a pet, are not financially capable of providing adequate medical care as well. Accidents happen and pets get sick just as our children & aging parents do. Veterinary services are VERY costly, especially in emergency situations. Many animals SLOWLY SUFFER to death when their owners cannot afford to take them to a vet. I do not wish this upon any creature. Would you want to be a pet belonging to a family who cannot afford to get you medical attention as you lay suffering in critical condition? In my opinion, instead of pushing for pet food stamps, we should be pushing for laws that make it mandatory for people to be at a certain income level before they are allowed to own a pet. People just don't realize how much it costs to be a responsible, loving pet owner. ...Heartworm preventatives, flea & tick preventatives, de-worming, dental care, healthy diet, senior care, supplies, fenced yard, vaccinations, etc. Sure, imposing an income requirement may result in a huge population of homeless animals. SO... we ask the government for money to fund temporary animal sanctuaries (for like 10 yrs?)... AND push for laws enforcing mandatory spay & neuter, at least until the animal population gets under control. (Similar to China putting a limit on human reproduction to control their population.) Over a course of say 10 yrs?, we won't need as many animal sanctuaries as the population decreases with strict spay/neuter laws. Eventually I would like to see this happen worldwide. Shall we get the ball rolling here in the U.S. so that we can serve as an example for the rest of the world? Thank you for reading. Eager to hear your thoughts on this. I am, by no means, claiming to have THE SOLUTION to happier, healthier pets; other views appreciated.
